about
I nearly didn't record this song. I played my flatmate a collection of new ideas and left this one until last saying "oh and this one is rubbish" but she told me that it was her favourite.
It's about feeling like the world has left you a little bit dull and that your anxiety, depression or mental wellbeing is on show for everyone to see. Feeling like everyone is looking at you, criticising you and talking about you, when reality all the flaws you see in yourself are in your head and nobody sees them but you.
I am guilty of being my own worst critic, of hearing passing comments of even compliments and turning them into negatives. But this song is about remembering that for so many, you are still sparkling and you don't need to be so hard on yourself.
lyrics
You used to be The one with the sparkle
Where did it go, did you give it away?
You used to be the one with the answers
You used to know all the right things to say
I don’t believe that you lose it
Your heart doesn’t break
You can only bruise it
So if you’re not doing so well
It’s only you who can tell
Don’t you think that it would be so much easier
Not being hard on yourself?
You used to be the one with the sparkle
Where did it go?
You look tired today
You can’t have it all, or so they tell you
The cracks start to show.
Are you feeling OK?
You don’t have to prove
That you’re perfect
Don’t ever doubt that
You’re more than worth it
So if you’re not doing so well
It’s only you who can tell
Don’t you think that it would be so much easier
Not being hard on yourself?
When it feels like
The weight of the world
Is on your back
You carry it with so much grace
And you’ll never lose that
So if you’re not doing so well
It’s only you who can tell
Don’t you think that it would be so much easier
Not being hard on yourself?
So don't be so hard on yourself
